May 30, 2010

Branch 54 of the Appeals Court reduced Ziaoldin Nabavi’s sentence to ten years in prison. Nabavi is a member of the Right to Education Council.

In his first trial, branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court found Nabavi guilty of assembly and conspiracy with intent to act against national security, anti-regime propaganda, disruption of public order, disturbance of public opinion, and collaboration with the MKO. Nabavi was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 74 lashes.

According to the Committee of Human Rights Reporters, Nabavi’s lawyer Zhinoos Sharifi stated before that the first court’s verdict was an act of vengeance to punish her client for his activities in the Right to Education Council.

Ziaoldin Nabavi was arrested on June 15, 2009 at a friend’s house. Nabavi’s lawyer has stated that her client’s main charge was his participation in the June 15th rally.
