Breaking the Language Barrier on Human Rights

June is the Month Dedicated to All Freedom Fighters in Iran

June 20, 2010

Picture of Sohrab Arabi in a street protest. Sohrab Arabi disappeared on June 15, 2010. It was later reported that he had died from a gunshot wound to the heart.

June 2009 was a bloody month in Iran. One too many young Iranians were murdered by members of the Islamic Republic regime. In spite of this fact, regime officials have yet to take responsibility for their actions and continue to deny responsibility for some of the murders. People around the world are witness to the cruel and illegal behaviour of the Iranian government through disturbingly real videos and images. It is impossible to deny the inhuman and selfish behaviour of the Islamic Republic regime.

Today, Persian2English will recognize and remember all the Iranians who died for freedom in the post-election uprising. Not all the Iranians who were killed are highlighted in this post and not all them have been identified even a year later.  Some readers have asked, “What does dying for freedom mean?” This phrase that is often seen circulating on Facebook and Twitter refers to the Iranians (no matter their age or gender) who made the decision to head to the streets to protest, being well aware that their actions may result in dire consequences like death, imprisonment, torture, and threats.

A year has passed since the 2009 Iranian Presidential election and Iranians continue to head to the streets. The Iranian people want freedom so bad that they are willing to risk their lives for it.  Freedom can be a vague word and its definition may vary depending on circumstance, but in the case of Iran and considering the 2009 post-election aftermath and the actions of the Iranian government, the word freedom is easily understood.

DEDICATED TO ALL OF IRAN’S FREEDOM FIGHTERS

Thank you to Aida Irani for the picture

Chasing Freedom

You go after freedom to be one
to feel whole in a world that left you alone
a world that didn’t guide properly
a world that made it hard to see.

But now you see opportunity
amidst all the impurity
hoping to be with freedom
a nonexistent freedom
that you are able to feel
but not able to touch
or taste.

All the same
you want it
more than you want yourself.
