Pregnant 25 Year Old Sentenced to Death by Stoning

July 14, 2010

UPDATE | August 13, 2010:  Life of Maryam Ghorbanzadeh in Danger, Forced Abortion at Six Months

Deutsche Übersetzung auf Julias Blog lesen

Stoning is a crime against humanity and must be banned everywhere

In the same prison where Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is detained, there are two other women sentenced to death by stoning. One of them is Maryam Ghorbanzadeh. She is 25 years old and is sentenced to stoning for “[engaging] in an extramarital affair.” Maryam is pregnant and expects the people of the world to help her.

Maryam’s lawyer talks of the possibility of changing the stoning sentence to execution [by hanging], which at that time an attempt will be made to turn that sentence to flogging.

The Islamic Republic has repealed the stoning sentences of 13 women in recent years as a result of international protests. In some cases, the defendants were freed after receiving 100 lashes instead. One of these women was Kobra Babaei whose sentence was repealed and she was released after [enduring] 100 lashes. Based on reports received by the International Committee against Executions, Kobra’s spine was damaged after the lashes and she now has difficulty walking. Her children say that the excruciating pain and the effects of the lashes have made their mother’s life extremely difficult.

At the moment, in Tabriz prison, a pregnant woman fights against stoning and execution. The savage punishment against Maryam Ghorbanzadeh must be condemned across the world.

The Islamic regime is misogynistic and inhumane and its savagery must be protested everywhere.

Stoning is a medieval and brutal form of punishment used against women, and at times men, who are convicted of extramarital affairs or homosexuality.

The International Committee against Executions calls on everyone to protest vehemently against the stoning punishment of Maryam Ghorbanzadeh. We demand an immediate repeal of all stoning sentences in Iran. Stoning has to be abolished in Iran and everywhere else [in the world].

Please join the movement against stoning,

The International Committee against Executions

EDITOR’S NOTE | The laws inside Iran are based on Islamic law, which is not aligned with the teachings of the Holy Qur’an. In Iran’s governmental system, religious law is used to loosely justify horrific acts of abuse, torture, and death.

“Maryam Ghorbanzadeh, 25 years old, in Tabriz prison: Maryam is also sentenced to death by stoning. Maryam has been in jail for four years. During a short prison leave that she was granted, she got pregnant, and the Islamic Republic sentenced her to death by stoning. Usually they wait for pregnant women to have their babies before they stone them.”

    1. Maybe I’m naive but l don’t understand any kind of people who claim that they are follower’s of the only true god can do this to a woman, let alone a pregnant woman. Where is the man in this situation???? Isn’t he just as guilty as she is. Why isn’t he being stoned???? The muslin religion is a pagan religion with its roots in terror and brutality.

    2. yes, you are absolutely right – according to the Holy Qur’an you should wait until she delivers the baby and stone her then. Or are you going to suggest that the 5 adult male witnesses threshold makes everything ok?

    3. Stoning a woman to death is the top of cruelty against humanity and does NOT fit into our time. This is worse than punishments during the Middle Ages. I’m ashamed to live upon a globe making this possible.

    4. I am not for stoning… I believe God should judge the individual who is committing such acts. But don’t say the “Islamic Regime” is a threat… it’s really the Iranian government who takes it to the extreme… iran is really the only country besides saudi arabia who stones for punishment.

    5. did god say to do this,,i think alot of these religions are run by the devil…if thats what there god wants then get rid of that god,,these men are cowards ,,to pick on woman,,,woman in these countrys need to take up arms and defend there selves…these men hate woman..wheres the other great churches catholic mormon ,,thats right they hate woman to..we woman need our own army.our own governments..and stop letting us be killed of

    6. @ samya: There are more than two countries that practice stoning: Saudi Arabia and Iran (as you mentioned), and Afghanistan, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Somalia, Nigeria, and I would not doubt if there were more that the international community did not know about. ALL of these countries use the Muslim religion to justify the use of stoning.

Pakistan allowed stoning until the Defense of Woman act in 2006.
Bangladesh only recently said that the law of the land was the constitution, not Islamic law (which had allowed stoning and other inhumane acts).
“In a survey carried out in Indonesia it found that “almost half the respondents back stoning as a punishment for adulterers.””

    7. First of all Stoning for adultry is and has been God’s Law,since the Tawrah. Yes, it is written in the Old Testament. It is the punishment that God prescribed for men and women! Not just women! So there is nothing misogynist about God’s Law! If you don’t know the rules, then you should read the Holy Quran and the Tafseers! Stoning only applies to the married person. the unmarried person must recieve 80 to 100 lashes. Obviously if both parties are married, stoning applies to both. Now, a pregnant women cannot be punished until she has delievered the child and givessuck. This could be up to two years. But this is whats gets me. For you to be charged with adultry, four witnesses must have actually seen the same action. In other words, they all must witness the private parts interacting! It does’nt take a genius to realize that for four people to see the private parts interacting all at the same time, their eyes would have to be right there! If one wintness sees something different the case is thrown out and the witnesses are punished! Of course admission says ,the punishment must be implemented. It is not clear whether these women are married or not. If they are not then the stoning is not in accordance with Sharia Law. If you are so careless that four people can observe not just two people lying on top of each other but observe the private parts then the punishment is sound. The punishment is severe because to commit adulty you use everything. Mankind will never be as wise as the one who created them. We question God,we override his laws, we alter His laws, and look what it has done and is doing to societies. But in the end therewill be severe punishments!

    8. I thought that this was an Islamic website. I see that you just want to present Islam your way and you are not trying to tell the whole story. Guys, i don’t have brainfreeze. I never wrote a comment on your site in my life. What you detected was you lack of courage to tell the people the truth! Your editor has lied on the Holy Quran! Stoning is prescribed in the Holy Quran! And in Islamic jurisprudence! Also the punishment for homosexuality is to throw them from the highest cliff! Do you really think that not printing what I write will help your case? You can play with me ok but you think that you can play with Allah! Do you think that you are stronger than Allah?,that you are smarter, wiser, more clever? Allah can smash you like a bug at anytime! Play your games now, because at the end of the day you will lose in this life and the next!

    9. For us westerns and the rest of the world, it seems as an atrocity against the human being. No words to describe this

    10. What is wrong with this website? You People don’t seem to know how to give your readers the complete facts. Now you have readers calling Islam a pagan religion and so forth. All because you have and article that’s completely devoid of the facts and as a Muslim,it is my duty to set the record straight if you people will print it and leave it so the facts can be read! First of all, your female readers should know that stoning applies to men as well! This article does lead one to believe that only women get stoned! What this article has failed to devulge is whether these women were or/ are married. If they are single and the man is married, then the man is stoned and the women gets 80 to 100 lashes. If both parties are married then both get stoned! If the man is single and the women is married then she will get stoned and the man will recieve 80 to 100 lashes! It should be noted that the lashed party will be banished from the community for one to two years! This is the only portion of the punishment that is discretionary or left up to the courts. For the reader who called Islam a pagan religion, please find the definition of the word. A then, read your scriptures! This law started with Moses(as). What God has ordered us to do as mankind is not to be altered period! God put these laws in place for a reason whether we fully understand them or not. And whether we like them or not! The people that give you have truths have a different agenda, and should not be trusted!
It should also be noted that sex outside of marriage is forbidden in all of the major religions and is subject to punishments!

    11. I mean, lets be real…True Shariah isn’t being applied to Iran. Stoning is a punishment used in extreme cases where valid and detailed proof is present at court… Shariah is used a deterrent, not sometign to just be applied for teh heck of it..

May God guide our people from wrong, and towards teh straight path. ameen

All of these laws maybe were good for 1400 years ago, but not for this time anymore! human beings are moving forward,we are becoming more educated for god sake!!! we can choose how to live, nobody should tell us what to do. some of these comments are really sad. I feel sorry for for those who still wants to follow the laws that you can’t use now!!! We’re in the 21st century people! Laws are only good for a certain period of time. Once people have moved forward and learned that some things are bad, then it is time for new laws.

Stoning is brutal. This is no way to treat a human being. It doesnt matter what she did, its her life to live. No one has a right to interfear in it except her. She hasnt commited a crime! Stonning is a crime! She should live her life however she wants. It has nothing to do with the government.

You put youself in her shoes. Think about it. Do you want to be dictated and told what to do forever or do you want to live your life the way that you want? Also think about being burried in the ground and being hit by stones. You have no way of running away, no way to defend yourself! I ask you is this justice?!

ARE YOU INSANE!? First of all, sex outside of marriage is wrong, but the punishment is not lashes or stoning! This is the punishment for 1400 years ago! This is not how you handdle this! Islamic countries are living in the laws of centries ago! GET REAL! Its not Gods law. God loves humanity and would never want to hurt them! This is Mullah’s law, people! NOT GOD! They say its Gods law so people think its ok to do it, and apparently it has worked on you!
How could you stand the fact that a someone (woman or MAN) be burried and stones thrown at them!?

I pray for those women in Iran.

    13. Its just wrong! I dont believe in any kind of god and im tired of reading that its gods will!! No one has the right to tell u how to live ur life if u r not hurtin anyone!!

    14. This really disgusts me. No true loving God agrees to murder. Affairs happen everyday and that doesn’t mean someone should be killed for it.

    15. I think that the issue here is not whether stoning is in accordance with any legal or religious laws, but whether this is a punishment that fits the crime. The idea of restraining a person with no defense and then inflicting a brutal, drawn out beating is abhorrant to many people the world over. It seems to me that marriage is no longer necessary, as governments will recognise a de facto couple who live together but have not been legally married. Then again, I live in the western world, where this is an acceptable practise and were we to punish people for sex outside of marriage, this would include a significant portion of the population.

My point is that I don’t agree with stoning, and I don’t agree with punishing people for extra marital affairs. That should not affect someone else’s right to disagree with me, but I am yet to hear a reasonable explanation for why stoning should be an acceptable punishment. I don’t think it is enough to say that it is God’s will and must be followed- after all, why give people free will if we are not to use it?

As for the required witnesses- if four people are to have seen this act, especially up close, why did none of them prevent it occurring in the first place? It seems to me that if a couple were in such an intimate, illicit situation, they would have stopped after the first person walked in, thereby preventing anyone else from seeing any interaction of body parts. Would you be so careless if you were married and facing such a severe penalty as to let not one, but four people see you commit adultery with another person?

    16. I agree with Amy, but I might add that if four people are required to witness adultery, that means the adultery never even happened! What couple in their right minds would have sex with even one person watching, let alone four. This in my opinon is all about trumped up charges. True, facing such a horrific sentence – why would anyone in their right mind have sex in front

anyone at all.??? I don’t believe men get that punishment as well for adultery – if they do, how come we never hear tell of it?

    17. sayfuddeen:

You are living in the dark ages… where is your logic or science: God! what God there is no God. Honestly I think you are unhinged. Look at the world around you, study the fossils. Hey I have never believed but I am still here….your so called God and not destroyed me yet…and never will because GOD DOES NOT EXIST. Your reason is floored and does not make any sort of sense. If you really need to make sense of the world read and get educated

“. What God has ordered us to do as mankind is not to be altered period” Get a life…. man made this all up not God or anything else. It’s just rubbish!

Sharia Law prevents you from thinking and feeling for yourself. Descartes would argue Cogito ergo sum “I think, therefore I am” – our ability to think, therefore evolve, is what proves that we exist and differentiates us from animals.
You state: “What God has ordered us to do as mankind is not to be altered period! God put these laws in place for a reason whether we fully understand them or not.” I would argue that this kind of deliberate lack of education, non-participation and inability to empathize makes it very easy for manipulating people into doing all sorts of things in the name of God without ever being questioned.

      Please try and justify this:

      – Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow, a child of 13, was stoned to death in Somalia under the charge of “adultery” after reporting that 3 men had raped her. None of the men she accused of rape were arrested. She was executed by a group of 50 men in a sports stadium in front of spectators.
To understand the full horror of this act please keep in mind that Iran’s Penal Code dictates in the case of death by stoning that the stones are large enough to cause pain, but not so large as to kill the victim immediately. Then remember that she was only 13 and had already been gang raped.

      – In the case of Mariam Ghorbanzadeh, the authorities are waiting for her to have her baby before stoning her to death, in the meantime, they are mistreating her that she miscarries.

Only two stories out of many.

Sayfuddeen, Do you mean to say it is right to beat and rape a pregnant woman? It is right to execute a child?
Is there no reasoning with Sharia? No pity? No respect for human life? No hope for equality between man and woman?

Merely writing this makes me feel ill.

I cite The Guardian and Amnesty International as my sources.

      Thank you

    19. Unbelievable in this day and age with all the advancements in technology communication and knowledge – that still some people are so ignorant so hard of heart and choose to behave like primitive psychopathic savages in a blood lusting frenzy wanting to torture and slowly murder women as is some kind of blood sport, looking for any excuse to appease their God.

The ancient Mayans” truly believed” that if they didn’t sacrifice a human being everyday by cutting out their heart whilst still alive that the sun wouldn’t rise everyday – they were very wrong because – guess what when it stopped – well the sun still rises everyday and so History will prove that the these sickening ancient practices are also very very wrong and are committed by willfully ignorant morons in the name of religion..

    20. All I can say is that God is a loving and merciful God. He is not a cruel God. And yes stoning may go back to the beggining of time practically and I don’t know my scriptures like i should but I do recall in the scriptures that is was said,’Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.’ or something of that sort. and that was what Jesus said when they where going to stone Mary for fornicating. If he can forgive who are we not to be able to. It is not for man to determine how to condemn someone when in the end we will all be judged. It is between us as individuals and God not us and man. I have no one hear to answer to but God. Just know that God sees everything and in the end he will judge you as people judge others and who’s judgement do you honestly believe will count? Yours or the almighty’s. Also look at what happened with the stoning of Soria M. She was an innocent woman falsely convicted of adultry by her husband so that he can get rid of her to marry a 14 year old girl. False witness/ testimony ended with her being murdered brutaly by the people and taken away from her children. Where is the justice in that. Yet her husband slept around and nothing was done to him. I guess that is justified in God’s eyes huh? These laws are just power trips by men and not God’s laws. It is the work of the Devil. That is what he wants done and people are actually doing his will and have the nerve to call it God’s work. Smarten up before it’s too late for you. My prayers are with those women in those foreign countries. May God have mercy on you.

    21. All I can say is that the Iranian cleric’s are all retarded, willfully ignorant and haven’t moved forward to the 21st century and the rest of humanity – see them as sadistic cruel sociopaths!
Surely to God – Allah has created and breathed life into this beautiful baby for a reason and not for man to brutally murder its Mother – only to leave it orphaned without its Mother to love it and protect it – Iran is a country full of misery and sorrow with out any mercy or love.

    22. This makes me absolutely sick to my stomach! What kind of human being could condemn another to such inhuman practices! My heart go’s out to this poor helpless lady and her family…………

    23. My God loves women as much as man. A husband is to love his wife as much as his own body. No woman would want her loving husband to have other wives. No loving couple would want another spouse in their marriage.

My God would never want a woman sequestered away in a tent for a man to rape her and treat her like a cow or a goat just for the purpose of breeding and catering to his needs.

My God would not want me to wear a Burka so I could only see 10 feet away and never enjoy the beauty of seeing mountains and rivers or my children playing.

My God would want my children to see my face, and know the love and tenderness I have for them. Our eyes are the windows to our soul, but eyes that are not permitted to see do not fully know their soul reflected back from others’ love.

Jesus told us to beware of false Gods before sacrificing himself for our sins …

The Truth is a double edged sword and woe to them who those who distort it to punish and control others for their own will.

The relevant verses from the Koran are:
      Koran 78:31
As for the righteous, they shall surely triumph. Theirs shall be gardens and vineyards, and high- bosomed virgins for companions: a truly overflowing cup.
      Koran 37:40-48
…They will sit with bashful, dark-eyed virgins, as chaste as the sheltered eggs of ostriches.
      Koran 44:51-55
…Yes and We shall wed them to dark-eyed houris. (beautiful virgins)
      Koran 52:17-20
…They shall recline on couches ranged in rows. To dark-eyed houris (virgins) we shall wed them…
      Koran 55:56-57
In them will be bashful virgins neither man nor Jinn will have touched before. Then which of the favours of your Lord will you deny ?”
      Koran 55:57-58
Virgins as fair as corals and rubies. Then which of the favours of your Lord will you deny ?”
      Koran 56:7-40
…We created the houris (the beautiful women) and made them virgins, loving companions for those on the right hand.. ”
      Koran 55:70-77
“In each there shall be virgins chaste and fair… Dark eyed virgins sheltered in their tents whom neither man nor Jin will have touched before..

      Quote from Hadiths
      Al Hadis, Vol. 4, p. 172, No. 34
Ali reported that the Apostle of Allah said, “There is in Paradise a market wherein there will be no buying or selling, but will consist of men and women. When a man desires a beauty, he will have intercourse with them.”

“VENGEANCE IS MINE”, sayeth the Lord. From Leviticus in the Old Testament to Romans in the New, both Christians and Jews have been told to never seek vengeance against one another, “but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord”. (Leviticus 19:18)

Every Christian child who ever went to Sunday school learned, “Do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good”, and “Therefore if your enemy hungers, feed him”. (Romans 12:21/20)

    24. there is no god, only bastards and perverts wishing control over this poor woman for their sick amusement. so fuck all religion and without the bullshit kneeling crawling scum of this earth vengeance would be allowed for this disgusting act. truly the time has come for not even a single lamp to shine, money where your word is mr g..o..d. except nothing will happen and all the religious knee crawlers will bow and praise the next day to a god who can not even be bothered to save an unborn child.

    25. Please don’t say things about something you don’t know!
Most people are frankly SCARED of ISLAM.
Get your facts straight! Authentic QUR’AN or HADITH!
You can’t make someone an atheist by jus saying there is no god… That just makes me laugh!
There is only ONE GOD! He created us, he doesnt need us, we need him, we will all be reckoned on the day of judgement.
When god created us he made laws, just like any crime we get punished when we break the law.
Just because times have changed does not mean the laws have, people have gone soo astray that when something wrong is being done, people make the wrong a right!
These people had it coming!, they deserve it! Because they know the punishment but still took that risk, so SHAME on these people.
Christians say ‘we all go to heaven’ if every one goes to heaven where do murderers, rapists, adulterers, and fornicators go???
