REPORT | Secretary of Tahkim Vahdat Hospitalized Again for Heart Complications Caused by Prison Pressures

July 23, 2010

Mehdi Arabshahi, student activist and the secretary of Daftare Tahkim Vahdat, was taken to Shahid Lavasani hospital on July 21, 2010 for heart complications.  According to Daneshjoo News, he was released after his condition improved.  Arabshahi is currently hospitalized at home under medical care. According to doctors, Arabshahi should receive special medical attention in order to avoid a future heart failure.

Arabshahi was arrested in Laleh Park by security forces on December 27, 2009 while Ashura clashes were going on. According to reports by students, security forces first recognized him before arresting him in the park.  Arabshahi was detained in Evin prison and spent three months in ward 240, solitary confinement.

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran elaborates on Arabshahi’s time in prison:

He was first summoned to Branch 1053 of Tehran General Courts on 23 November 2009 on the charge of “disrupting public order through illegal congregation.” During his incarceration in Evin Prison Arabshahi suffered a severe heart attack due to physical and psychological pressures during interrogation. Prison officials transferred him to Qamar Bani Hashem Hospital. After his release he was put under the care of medical specialists who recommended he be hospitalized for treatment.

Mehdi Arabshahi was released in March 2010 on a bail of approximately $200,000 USD.  30 year old Arabshahi had no medical record of heart complications prior to his time in prison.

RSF and Amnesty International issued a joint statement on July 16, 2010 expressing outrage over the health of Iranians detained in prison.  The organizations believe the aim of medical neglect is to “put pressure on prisoners and their families.”

The joint statement further reads:

The information obtained from families and from reports often published in the official media confirms that in the past year many prisoners of conscience have had heart attacks or other cardiac problems in different prisons, especially Evin and Raja’i Shahr. The health of some detainees is deteriorating steadily. The prison authorities refuse to allow ailing prisoners to be transferred to hospitals even though they urgently need treatment that can only be given outside a prison and even when the prison doctors themselves recommend it.

“The authorities are responsible for the health and safety of all the persons they detain,” Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders said. “They must provide them with access to adequate medical care, outside detention centres if necessary.”

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran states that the “deteriorating health of several inmates during the past few weeks has put the spotlight on this situation. Some time ago, the Campaign reported that prison authorities are torturing prisoners of conscience by keeping them in dangerous hygienic conditions and denying medical treatment to them.” The Campaign’s spokesperson Hadi Ghaemi stated, “Iran is targeting prisoners of conscience by subjecting them to overcrowding, disease, inadequate accommodations, unsanitary conditions, malnutrition, and lack of access to medical care.”

Mehdi Arabshahi is a management studies student at Allameh Tabatabai University. In the three months before the end of 2009, Abbas Hakimzadeh and Milad Asadi, two other members of the central council of Daftar-e Tahkim Vahdat, were also arrested.

The International Campaign provides a brief history of Dafatr-e Tahkim Vahdat:

Daftar Tahkim Vahdat is a nationwide student organization whose members were widely arrested and imprisoned after last year’s elections. Last year the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology declared the student organization illegal. Security officials asked the imprisoned members of the organization to rescind their memberships in the organization and to condemn actions and political statements made by the organization as a condition for their freedom. The imprisoned members refrained. Bahareh Hedayat, Milad Asadi, Abbas Hakimzadeh, Morteza Samyari, and Mehdi Arabshahi are some of the members of the Central Council of Dafter Tahkim Vahdat Organization who have faced threats and imprisonment after last year’s presidential elections.
