Breaking the Language Barrier on Human Rights

CALL OUT FOR URGENT UNITY CAMPAIGN

August 05, 2010

THE LATEST: TORONTO JOINS UNITY CAMPAIGN

Human rights activist Ardeshir Zarezadeh has confirmed to P2E that the Toronto group United Student Front in Canada will be creating a human chain tomorrow at Dundas Square to draw attention to the imminent executions and the growing number of political prisoners on hunger strike. If you’re in Toronto, join in to create a united chain for imprisoned Iranians.

Top two stories coming out of Iran that need immediate international attention:

1. The re-announcement and confirmation of six imminent executions.  Jafar Kazemi is among the political prisoners at risk of execution. In fact, Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi delivered a message to his family that he will “definitely be executed.” And of course, there is Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who still faces execution after her stoning sentence was called off due to international pressure.

2. 17 + political prisoners go on hunger strike to protest their transfer to solitary confinement after they initially protested against the behaviour of Evin prison staff in ward 350. Several of the prisoners fell ill and were transferred to the prison clinic. Despite this, they continue with their strike. Is this admirable enough for you?

Both news pieces are extremely important. Since they are both important, hard-working activists around the world have launched coinciding protests. But, unfortunately, due to the scarcity in groups who organize protests, many cities are either protesting against the executions or they are standing in solidarity with the hunger strike prisoners.

There is not enough time to plan and organize when the prisoner hunger strikes are happening now and the executions are imminent. A quick solution would be to combine the two in one protest. It would be a much larger and more powerful message of unity. A united campaign would strengthen the Iranian opposition supporters and activists.

TO ALL THE ORGANIZERS OF THESE EVENTS:

Do not limit what you can do. The prisoners at imminent risk of execution and the ones on hunger strike are all political prisoners used by the Iranian regime to fulfill its atrocious game of holding onto power.

TO ANYONE WHO PLANS TO ATTEND AN EVENT:

Print out signs that reflect both the hunger strike and the executions. Hold them with pride and power. Show the Iranian regime we are united through and through.

We have the power to make a difference by uniting our voices. Let us utilize our power and not let this opportunity pass us by.
