Tehran: Cries for Freedom Pierce the NightSeptember 21, 2010
In the past few weeks, the Iranian regime has tightened its grip on 2009 Iranian presidential candidates Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi. Both opposition leaders have been confronted recently by regime security and Basij forces and had their properties vandalized. Supporters of the opposition leaders have also been threatened and interrogated. Following a raid on Mousavi’s office on September 16th, posters began to be distributed on the internet to promote a chanting event of “Allah O Akbar” (“God is Great”) scheduled for September 20th at 10:00pm.
Last night, citizens in Tehran went on their rooftops and chanted “Allah O Akbar,” “Death to the dictator,” “Death to despotism,” and “Ya Hossein, Mir Hossein” to demonstrate to Iran’s dictatorship regime that the people cannot be silenced and the opposition is still very much alive.
According to a citizen in Tehran who was video recording the event, regime security forces arrived with two vans and began loudly blowing their whistles in an attempt to suppress the chants.
