“Fear of Green Presence Cancelled Eid ul-Fitr Prayer in Mosalla”

Saturday, September 5, 2009

A day after the cancellation of “Ahya Nights” mourning ceremonies at Imam Khomeini’s Mausoleum, held for the past twenty years, an official in charge announced that the Eid ul-Fitr Prayer will not be held at Tehran’s Mosalla prayer complex. Meanwhile four months ago, Tehran’s International book fair in all its massiveness was held in Mosalla, and currently throughout the month of Ramadan the Koran exhibition is being held in the complex as well.

The official named construction projects in the complex as the cause of the cancellation; although the Koran exhibition will continue to be held until four days prior to the Eid ul-Fitr. Some analysts believe the concerns of little participation of people in the Eid ul-Fitr Prayer and also possibility of the presence of the Green Movement supporters are the causes of this decision.

The following is Islamic Republic News Agency’s (IRNA) report regarding this story:

Mohammad Eidian in an exclusive interview with IRNA, noting that Tehran’s Mosalla prayer complex is not ready to host the glorious Eid ul-Fitr Prayer, indicated construction projects within the Mosalla complex as the cause of this matter.

Over the past several years, the Mosalla complex has been hosting over one to two million prayers to perform the Eid ul-Fitr Pray, and Tehran’s Municipality through organizing a special commission has been responsible to prepare the necessary essentials to hold this ceremony.

Pointing to current construction operations in the west and east sections of the Mosalla, he remarked, “The construction ambiance within the Mosalla does not make it possible to accommodate the million populations of prayers on the day of Eid ul-Fitr.

Regarding the fact that Tehran Municipality has always prepared Mosalla despite continuation of construction operations, Eidian clarified, “This year the prospect of preparing this place was not possible, and it was decided to hold the Eid ul-Fitr Prayer in Tehran University’s prayer complex.”

The deputy of urban services at Tehran Municipality, noting that Municipality will relocate its arrangements, to hold the Prayer, to Tehran University, mentioned, “Of course, considering experience of holding numerous Prayer events at Tehran University, there aren’t any problems related to holding the Eid ul-Fitr Prayer in this place.”
