On Tuesday morning, the families of jailed student activists Bahareh Hedayat and Mahdieh Golroo were once again turned away at the front doors of Evin prison.

Over the past several months, especially since their transfer to the Methadone ward, Mahdieh Golroo and Bahareh Hedayat have encountered many problems caused by security and judicial authorities. The Methadone ward, which is normally used for dangerous criminals and drug addicts, is a closed hall measuring no bigger than 30 to 35 meters in length. The prisoners in this ward are allowed outside to use fresh air less than one hour per day. Additionally, the prisoners are excluded from some facilities like the library, deprived of their right to use the phone, only allowed cabin visits, and are prohibited from face-to-face meetings.

During the past 40 days, the two student activists had only met with their families once. Three weeks before the visitation ban enforced, Mahdieh Golroo and Bahareh Hedayat had ended their hunger strikes and were awaiting clarification on their cases.

Over the past couple of days the families of the two prominent student activists had repeatedly gone to judicial authorities including the Prosecutor’s office, but they were unable to receive any clear answers.

Additionally, a few weeks ago, Mahdieh Golroo and Bahareh Hedayat were summoned to Evin prison court to face new charges.

Bahareh Hedayat has been held in detention since her arrest on December 31, 2009. She has been sentenced to nine and a half years in prison by Judge Moghiseh of branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court. Mahdieh Golroo was arrested on December 3, 2009. She has been sentenced to two years in prison.
