Persian2English —
After three weeks of no news on Mehdi and Fatemeh Karroubi’s house arrest situation, yesterday, their son, Mohammad Taghi Karroubi published a short note on his personal website announcing that a family friend visited his parents.

“…A dear cleric who is trusted, both by our family and the regime, called me on the phone and told me that he had visited my parents last night. The climate was cordial. He informed me that [my parents] are peaceful and in good health,” Karroubi’s son said. He also said that he hopes the family’s rights of being informed and receiving visitations will soon be recognized.

The report on the announcement was published by Mehdi Karroubi’s affiliated website, Saham News, but no information was released on the details of the visit or the situation of Mehdi and Fatemeh Karroubi.

On March 11th, Saham News reported that, after 18 days, the lights were turned on in the parking lot, house entrance, the living room, and bedroom of the Karroubi residence. An unidentified family member of Mehdi Karroubi said, “We still believe that our mother and father were arrested, abducted, and taken to an undisclosed location.   Even if they were returned to their residence as a result of the internal and external pressures [on the ruling government] and the heroic actions of our nation, we will not [believe] the government’s actions until we are provided with the opportunity to see them personally at their home…”

Mehdi Karroubi’s third son, Ali Karroubi has also been feeling the heavy pressures of the security forces. He was beaten badly in February 2010 by regime plainclothes forces and reports surfaced that he was briefly arrested, but the Tehran Prosecutor, Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi denied the claims.  On *February 22, 2011, upon hearing the news of a raid by security forces on his parents’s home, Ali Karroubi and his wife immediately went to the scene and, according to Ali Karroubi, 30 masked security agents were present. He said that his father was locked in a room on the first floor and his mother was held on the fifth floor. Ali Karroubi and his wife were arrested during the raid. His wife was released a few hours after, but, according to Saham News, Ali Karroubi remains detained in Evin prison in solitary confinement. There has been no further reports to confirm or deny the news of the raid and arrests from any opposition or regime media. [Update, March 17: Ali Karroubi was released from prison on a $100 thousand USD bail. The name of the prison was not specified].

Husband and wife, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard

On February 28th, Mir Hossein Mousavi’s affiliated website, Kaleme reported that Mir Hossein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard, and Mehdi and Fatemeh Karroubi were transferred from house arrest to Heshmatiyeh prison. The same day, Iran’s General Prosecutor, Gholam Hossein Mohseni Eje’i released a statement to confirm the house arrest news but denied any transfers to prison. Hours after, Mousavi’s daughters told Kaleme that they strongly rejected state media’s denial of the arrests.

Following the statement by Eje’i, the Tehran Prosecutor, calling the claims lies, denied both the news of imprisonment and house arrest for the four reformist opposition heads. On March 3rd, 18 days after the disappearances, Mousavi’s daughters released a new statementpublished by Kaleme, describing an unsuccessful attempt to visit their parents’s residence the night before.

Mir Hossein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard, and Mehdi and Fatemeh Karroubi have been under house arrest since February 14th, 2011, following a widespread national citizen opposition protest on the same day, organized by supporters of Mousavi and Karroubi as a solidarity rally with Egypt and Tunisia.

The widespread protests continued on a weekly basis from February 14th until March 15th. Based on protest videos and news reports, the main chant of Iranian citizens has been, “Marg bar dictator” (Down with the dictator), referring to Ali Khamenei and the Supreme leadership.

*Reports on the exact date of the raid and the arrests have been inconsistent.
