Ashkian Zahabian Activist and Banned Student Arrested AgainMay 28, 2013
Persian2English — According to reports, Iranian security forces have arrested Ashkan Zahabian, a student activist and member of the General Council of the Daftar Tahkim Vahdat student organization. The arrest, which was his fourth one, occurred at Ashkan’s home in Babol on Monday morning. He was taken to an unknown location, says the Committee of Human Rights Reporters (CHRR).
According to the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran (ICHRI), in 2008, Ashkan Zahabian was suspended from one academic term for his student activism. In February 2009, while still suspended from his studies, Ashkan Zahabian was banned [starred or expelled] from his university education. He was enrolled in Ferdowsi University of Mashhad at the time and had only one term left to complete before graduation.
On June 16, 2009, four days following the 2009 Presidential elections in Iran, Ashkan Zahabian was arrested for the first time during a protest at the University of Mazandaran. According to a previous report by CHRR, Ashkan was severely beaten by Ansar Hezbollah forces before Ministry of Intelligence agents arrested him at that protest. He was subsequently held for one month in solitary confinement at the Sari Ministry of Intelligence detention centre and then transferred to Mati Kola Prison in Babol. According to CHRR, while held in Mati Kola, Ashkan was deprived of medical care and kept with prisoners possessing criminal charges. He was forced to spend a total of three months in solitary confinement in both prisons. Additionally, ICHRI had reported that Ashkan launched a hunger strike on August 31 from Mati Kola Prison.
Ashkan Zahabian was arrested for the second time on November 3, 2009 and later issued charges including, “Acting against national security”. The Revolutionary Court in Babol sentenced Ashkan to six months in prison for his student activities, though regime authorities did not give him the right to an attorney or defend himself.
Ashkan’s third arrest occurred on May 2, 2011 upon his arrival to the Sari Ministry of Intelligence office, as per an official summons order. A close source told ICHRI that Ashkan and his family were being harassed and threatened by regime forces one year prior to the May 2011 arrest. As a result of the pressures inflicted on the family, Ashkan’s mother was hospitalized following a loss in blood pressure and “his father’s heart condition worsened.” ICHRI says there is no doubt that Iranian security forces used “systematic psychological pressure on his family to arrest him.”
Below are excerpts from an interview ICHRI conducted with Ashkan Zahabian’s father about his son’s situation and personal failed attempts to seek answers from the authorities:
As a political prisoner, should my son be placed with hardened criminals, thieves, and murderers? We maintained silence despite all of these concerns, but I can see that our silence will lead to my child’s death. What is my son’s crime that makes him guilty again? For what crime? If it was for the [2009 presidential] election, he has already served his sentence. Why was he sentenced to prison again?”
“I went to the prison several times and told them that my son was sick. They said we have doctors here. My son threw up blood yesterday. The last time I saw him was on Sunday. He haslost so much weight. The authorities are only throwing me from one side to another like a football. I tell the Prosecutor’s Office, they tell me to go to the Intelligence Office. I go there, they say to go to the case judge. The judge says that medical furlough is not in my hands. We don’t know whom to tell about this.”
