Zahra Rahnavard Demands the Immediate
Release of All Imprisoned Women

Zahra Rahnavard, the wife of Mir Hossein Mousavi, stated that imprisoning women is a sign of “great unfaithfulness to Islamic values and freedom.” She asked for the immediate and unconditional release of women in prison.

According to Parleman News, on Monday, Mrs. Rahnavard along with her husband Mr. Mir Hossein Mousavi visited the family members of Faizollah Arab Sorkhi, who is a member of the Islamic Revolution Mojahedin Organization. Faizolla Arab Sorkhi has been in prison for more than four months. In their visit Mrs. Rahnavard stated that she demands the immediate and unconditional release of all who were detained in the post election protests . She added, “This paints a horrible picture of the government for the people.”

Zahra Rahnavard who had accompanied her husband during his presidential campaign and had received widespread news coverage, is now a very well-known figure among the supporters of the Green Movement.

In another segment of her talks pointing at the arrest and imprisonment of free thinking women, whether working for equal rights or for the green movement, she stated that in the post election protests, women have had a largely visible presence. Many of the social and political activists, journalists, and women who worked for equal rights have been arrested and many are still incarcerated.

Zahra Rahnavard with emphasis on the presence of women in the Green movement added “The Iranian women have very high potentials of intelligence, enforcement, science, and combat. They are also  leaders in this movement. Women not only are concerned for national interests, but they are also very active in pursuing their demands for equality.”

Since some years ago, a group of active  women established the “One Million Signatures Campaign” to attain gender equality. They have received a lot of international attention.

In the meeting, Mir Hossein Mousavi stated, “The path we have chosen is definitely a difficult path,” he continued, “Definitely it is a way toward improvement and it will end in the best interest of the nation.”

He also pointed to the political figures that have been arrested post-election and said, “Interrogators in their dialogue with the children of revolution are facing challenges.”

Following street protests in Iran, hundreds of protestors have been arrested and a few days after the election results were broadcasted, dozens of political figures from reformist groups and organizations such as the Islamic Iran Participation Front, the Revolutionary Party of MKO were also arrested.
